08. She wanted to forget him, but she couldn’t help (thinking) about him.
「彼女は彼のことを忘れたかったが、彼のことを考えずにはいられなかった」
can’t (cannot) help ～ing「～せずにはいられない、～せざるをえない」
= can’t but 動詞の原形
= can’t help but 動詞の原形
この場合、help は「助ける」ではなくて「～を避ける」という意味です。
help ～ ing = avoid ～ ing 「～を避ける」と覚えておきましょう。
また、but は「しかし」ではなくて「～以外」という前置詞です。
前置詞の後に動詞の原形が来ることもあります。
助動詞を用いた慣用表現を覚えましょう。
今回は can を用いた表現です。
can’t have p.p.「～したはずがない」
as ～ as … can = as ～ as possible
「できるだけ～」
can’t ～ too …
「いくら…しても～し過ぎるということはない」
