「私たちは時間決めでボートを借りた」
by + the + 単位「～単位で、～決めで」
by the pound「１ポンド単位で」
by the dozen「１ダースいくらで」
１ポンド、１ダースなどと書かれていても
a pound や a dozen にはしないこと。
「１時間」は an hour ですが
「１時間いくらで」になると by the hour となるので
要注意です。
