節を句にする方法を覚えよう。
【解説】
We are astonished that she failed the exam.
= We are astonished ( at ) her ( failure ) in the exam.
「私たちは彼女が試験に落ちたことに驚いた」
be astonished that SV = be astonished at 名詞
fail (v.) ～に失敗する、～に落ちる
failure (n.) 失敗
fail in the exam「試験に落ちる」だが
今は通例、in を省略して
fail the exam とすることが多い。
that 節はほとんど of + 名詞に変換すれば節を句に変えることができる。
しかし、そうでないものもある。
at にするもの。
be surprised at ～, be amazed at ～「～に驚く」
on にするもの
insist on ～「～を主張する」
for にするもの
be sorry for ～「～をすまないと思う」
などを覚えておこう！
なお
節…２語以上の一まとまりで、一つの品詞の働きをする。その中にSVがある。
句…２語以上の一まとまりで、一つの品詞の働きをする。その中にSVがない。
従って、節中の SV の関係をなくしてしまえば、節を句に変換できる。
