程度を表す接続詞を用いた表現を覚える！
代表的な表現
so ～ that …「非常に～なので…、…するほど～」
such ～ that …「非常に～なので…、…するほど～」
違いは、so ～ that …は、～の部分に、形容詞か副詞が入りますが、
such ～ that …は、～の部分に、形容詞＋名詞が入ることです。
また、名詞だけの場合もあります。とにかく名詞が必要です。
He was so tired that he couldn’t work.
「彼は非常に疲れていたので、働けなかった」
It was such a boring lecture that he fell asleep.
「非常に退屈な講義だったので、彼は寝てしまった」
He was in such a hurry that he forgot to take his umbrella.
「彼は非常に急いでいたので、傘を持っていくのを忘れた」
ただし、so ～ that …も、a(n) の位置を変えることによって、～の部分に形容詞＋名詞を置くことができます。
ただし、a(n) のない表現には使えません。
It was so boring a lecture that he fell asleep.
a の位置に注意です。
so ～ that …の文の書き換えはいくつかパターンを覚えておきましょう。
He was so kind that he showed me the way to the station.
「彼は親切にも私に駅に行く道を教えてくれた」
= He was kind enough to show me the way to the station.
= He was so kind as to show me the way to the station.
= It was very kind of him to show me the way to the station.
また、so ～ that … can’t － は、too ～ to －で書き換えます。
The book was so difficult that he couldn’t understand it well.
「その本は非常に難しかったので、彼はそれをよく理解できなかった」
= The book was too difficult for him to understand well.
程度を表す接続詞を用いた表現をもう一つ覚えておきましょう。
S is such that ～ = Such is S that ～ です。
「 S は大変なものなので～」
Such was her delight that she began to dance.
= Her delight was such that she began to dance.
「彼女の喜びは大変なもので、彼女は踊りだした」
これらの構文の that ～ は程度を表す接続詞で、「～するほど…」と後ろから訳すこともできます。
