否定語 ＋ 比較級 の意味を覚える！
【解説】
They have as many as ten children.
= They have no (less) than ten children.
「彼らには１０人も子供がいる」
no + 比較級 + than → イコール（＝）の関係になると覚える。
否定語はその直後の語を打ち消す。
not + 比較級 + than → 単純な打消し「それほど～ない」
no more than = only 「～しか…ない」
not more than = at most 「多くても～、せいぜい～」
no less than = as much (many) as 「～も」
not less than = at least 「少なくとも～」
no + 比較級 → イコール～ない 「同様に～ない」
not + 比較級 → 単純な打消し 「～ほど…ない」
no more ～ than …「…同様に～ない」
not more ～ than …「…ほど～ない」
no less ～ than …「…同様に～」
not less ～ than …「…に勝るとも劣らず～」
否定語はその直後の語を打ち消している。
次の問題をどうぞ。
そのボールは卵くらいの大きさしかない。
The ball is no ( )( ) an egg.
= The ball is as ( ) as an egg.
no bigger than を見たら、as small as を思い描けるようになればＯＫです。
「イコール、大きくない」 → 「同様に小さい」
否定語＋比較級を見たら直感的に意味が分かるようにすること。
例えば
no better than ～
まずは、no better で「同様に良くない」と感じることです。
no は否定語でその直後の語を打ち消す。
better を打ち消しているので、良くない。
no と比較級でイコール良くない。
no better than ～「～同然だ」
という意味です。
