【解説】
比較級 ＋ than ～ とするのが基本です。
しかし、than を取らない語句があるので覚えましょう。
be superior to ～「～より優れている」もその一例です。
だが、安易に to にしないこと。
ここは to them が省略されていると考える。
in number「数において」は、ただの修飾語。
than を取らない比較を覚える！
-or で終わる単語は than を取らずに to を取る。
be senior to ～「～より年上」
be junior to ～「～より年下」
be superior to ～「～より優れている」
be inferior to ～「～より劣っている」
など
動詞としては
prefer A to B
ただし
prefer A rather than B
の形も取れる。
念のため次の問題

Answer : by 「～だけ（差を表す）」
「彼は3歳だけ私より年上だ」
= He is three years senior to me.
= He is senior to me by three years.
機械的に前置詞を入れないように注意しましょう。
