関係副詞の where は、副詞の代わりをしています。
This is the house.
He lives there.
この２文を where を用いて１文にします。
This is the house where he lives.
= This is the house in which he lives.
This is the place.
I met him there yesterday.
この２文を where を用いて１文にします。
This is the place where I met him yesterday.
= This is the place at which I met him yesterday.
There is no place.
They return to the place.
同様に
There is no place where they return.
= There is no place to which they return.
where は there の代わりをしていて、２文を１文にする働きがあります。
there は 副詞で「～に」「～で」「～まで」など文脈で様々な意味になります。
